你问我答学英语第27期:代理CEO

发表时间:2017-10-19内容来源:VOA英语学习网
So first of all, let me explain that the Chief Executive Officer is the person at the head of a company. 首先,我先解释一下,Chief Executive Officer——总裁,是一个公司最大的人物。 But you might not have actually heard this said very much, and that's because it's such a mouthful that speakers of English often just use the initials - 'CEO', and that's true of both speech and writing. 但是也许这种叫法你听得并不是太多,这是因为它是个又长又拗口的词,所以说英语的人通常只用它的缩写形式CEO。在口语和书面中都是这样。 I've got a couple of examples from BBC news stories. Here's one from October 2006: 我这里有很多取自BBC新闻的一些例句,以下这个来自2006年10月份的一则新闻: "Streiff resigns as CEO of Airbus" Streiff辞去了Airbus总裁的职位。 The chief executive of troubled plane maker Airbus has resigned... 也就是说,困境中的飞机制造公司的总裁辞职了…… And here's another: 这里还有一个: "CEO swaps hedge fund for charity" (Sep 2006) 总裁把避险基金换成了慈善基金。 The chief executive of the world's biggest hedge fund, is to step down to focus on private philanthropy... 世界上最大的避险基金公司的总裁打算卸任转向个人慈善事业。 But anyway, the question here isn't 'What is a chief executive officer?' it's about Acting Chief Executive Officers. 但不管怎样,我们在此讨论的问题不是“何为CEO?”而是临时CEO。 And here's an example: 我们来看一个例子。 A friend of mine, who's the CEO of a charity, recently took a few months off to have a baby - she went on maternity leave. 我一朋友,是一个慈善机构的CEO,她最近离开几个月,因为要生小孩。 And while she was away, someone else took her job for a few months. 而在她离开的几个月期间,别人会接手她的工作。 That person had an official job title, Acting CEO - Acting Chief Executive Officer. 这个人正式的工作头衔就是临时CEO。 Now acting here has nothing to do with Hollywood - it just means being temporarily but officially in a job. 这里,acting这个词和好莱坞一点关系都没有,它仅仅表示在某工作中临时的,正式的。 And the person that normally does that job is away - perhaps they've left and a permanent replacement hasn't been found. 以前从事该工作的人不在——或许是离开了,而且是暂时性的。 You can be an acting anything, pretty much: an Acting Manager, Acting Head, Acting Editor, but your role is recognized. 可以代理的职业有很多,比如说:代理经理,代理老板,代理编辑,但这个代理的角色是被认可的。 So in my friend's case, the Acting CEO got the job title, the money and the recognition. 拿我朋友的例子来说,这个代理CEO得到了工作头衔,薪水还有名誉。 She was lucky! Sometimes, a company might not find a replacement immediately, or perhaps not find one at all. 我朋友是幸运的,有时一个公司不可能立刻就找到一个临时的代理人,甚至是根本就无法找到这样一个人。 And some poor person still has to do all the extra work. 有些可怜的代理人还不得不干额外的活儿。 That person might be acting as the CEO - they're doing the work but not necessarily getting the recognition, the pay or the official job title - they may or may not be. 这个人也许只是在履行总裁的职能——他们做着总裁的活儿但是不一定会得到认可,比如总裁的薪水或者正式的头衔(不管本身是不是总裁)。 So, two examples: 再说两个例子: Maurizio is the Acting CEO Maurizio是代理总裁。 That means he gets the official title, the money, the recognition. 这就是说,他有着正式的总裁头衔、薪水以及认可。 And he's also doing the work - he's acting as the CEO. 他也会履行总裁的职能,扮演着总裁的角色。 On the other hand, poor old Maria, in her company, is acting as the CEO but she's not getting the job title or the extra money; she's not officially the Acting CEO. 另例:可怜的Maria在公司履行着总裁的职能,但是她并没有得到总裁这个头衔或者额外的薪水;她并不是正式的代理CEO。 Now a quick word about a related phrasal verb 'act up'. 先在再来简单地说说动词短语act up。 If you fill an acting position, it's normally a level above your usual job; you're acting up. 当你填补一个什么代理职位时——通常是高于你平时的职务,而你就是在acting up——代理其职。 So, we can say, for instance: 所以,我们可以说,例如: Maurizio is acting up while Glenda's away. Maurizio在Glenda不在的时候代理其职。 You have to be careful with this verb though. 但是大家做使用这些词的时候要注意。 Like many English phrasal verbs it's got more than one meaning. 就像很多的英语动词词组一样,它们的意思不止一个。 'Act up' can also mean 'misbehave', as in: act up还可以是捣乱的意思,如在以下例句中: "My children have been really acting up today." ‘我的孩子今天真的很捣乱’。 And if you say: "My boss is acting up" - it could have either meaning! 但是如果你说,‘My boss is acting up’,它可以同时具有两个意思呢! 来自:VOA英语网 文章地址: http://www.tingvoa.com/html/20171019/503687.html
